“The Benefits of Writing Your Memoir”
Bio: Teru took a circuitous path toward becoming a personal historian. After earning a degree in dance and performing with a dance company in her 20s, she began writing when she was 30 when she took an autobiographical writing class at the University of Washington. Eventually she wrote short fiction, and when she was 50 she turned to journalism. She wrote for several magazines, but found her calling writing short profiles of people for a weekly newspaper which led to writing longer personal histories.
After living in Seattle for 35 years, Teru and her husband moved to Anacortes 4 years ago. She wrote for supplements of the Skagit Valley Herald, which expedited her getting to know this area. She has a blog on the website Anacortes Now, on which she profiles residents of this area. Teru teaches memoir writing at the Anacortes Senior Activity Center and the Anacortes Senior College, and helps non-writers turn their memoirs into books. She believes that everyone has a unique life story that deserves to be told.
